Darla is a mixed media artist – combining the arts of photography, fashion and theater sets to produce some very artful and inspiring shots. Formerly a stylist, model and dancer, her current works are photographic – often hand drawing the backgrounds and using recycled or vintage props. Darla’s works are wonderfully dramatic, peek-a-boo-like window displays into postcard historical fantasies. They are decorative, feminine and tactile – woven vaudeville beauties. She currently lives in Austin, Texas in a blue house with her son, 3 dogs, a dwarf rabbit and a black pot bellied pig.

David Ball’s art is a mixed bag – beautifully crafted, designed, adorned and painted collages. They are surreal dream-like fantasies which speak (to me) of childhood and early monster sightings. Almost magical in their illusions – mixed-up zones, whether it be physical or spiritual pervade his art. Underwater deserts, animal people and vintage subterranean folk tales – all unite seamlessly in his works. They are many-layered and buffed to smooth perfection, daring one to tell where the paint meets the paper. He currently lives in good ole’ San Francisco and has a body of new assemblage work - “Harum Scarum”, which opens at 111 Minna Gallery on Feb. 2, 2012.

My favorite art memory from my childhood is … Walking through the woods in Connecticut. with my father trying to see things that weren’t there. As we would walk through the woods he would stop me from time to time and show me a tree root, or the negative spaces between trees, in the clouds and would say, “What do you see there? Looks like a face to me!” In this and other ways, he started to teach me about art from a very early age. I just didn’t realize that he was teaching me design and perception. Also, having grown up in a cold weather climate, we had a lot of fires in the cold months. When we did, I would just sit there with one of the cats and zone out on the continually changing flames..

Rabbit and Doe - David Ball

My interest in art/painting started … It is hard to say. I took to drawing quite a bit in middle school years. I was much more interested in my newly burgeoning sexuality and in running. In seventh grade I started to study with a drawing tutor. My real drive for art kicked in around 16. I am fortunate to say that my parents provided me additional tutoring with an oil instructor and at 17, with a pastelist from Art Center. At this time I also got my first drafting board. My father was the an art director, and critiqued my work rigorously. I was sensitive about this but I believe that art was always the healthiest way that I connected with my father.

Pozzo and Lucky - David Ball

College was a rather hedonistic experiment – so, while I paid attention in class and did what I needed to pass, it didn’t really get serious until I got out. Once I graduated, I bid for a job painting trompe l’oeil by pretending that the slides of the colored pencil and marker works in my portfolio were paintings. From that work, I got a commission to do a 96″x108″ piece which really opened up my love for paint. While away for a month in England I saw the anamorphic (producing, relating to, or marked by intentional distortion of an image) works of Samuel Van Hoogstraten. I came back very inspired to understand the nature of distortion and visual perception. So I did a series of works focusing on understanding how different types of kaleidoscopes break up imagery and then went on to studying various types of anamorphic work. (below)

First of 2 examples of David's earlier anamorphic works

I am often inspired and motivated by … Conceptually, I am inspired by people, what is said, and isn’t said, and their sense of place within themselves, their relationships and their environment. Visually, I am inspired by everything and nothing in particular. Movement, planes, shadows, distortion, emotion, perception, conditioning, the unconscious: all these things interest me.

If I could spend the day with any artist (dead or alive) it would be … And we would…. I would like to talk with Max Ernst, Duchamp or Picasso. I imagine food (because I am hungry at present), drinks and art discussion and then hopefully the opportunity to watch them work.

The tip or art technique (a specific tidbit of craft, advice or mechanical expertise) that has helped me the most is … It is not a tip that I was given but one that I am happy to provide. I have found that, at least with National Geographic, that the issues printed in the last few years, while beautiful, are difficult to burnish down without the images losing their ink and requiring touchup. Good for the environment but not so good for collage.

If I could own one piece of art, out of the world’s collections, it would be … Gino Severini’s Dynamic Hieroglyphic of the Bal Tabarin of 1912. (below) I find it as stimulating and curious as I did when I first saw it in 1987.

My favorite piece of my own art is … because … I think the triptych “Itch” (below) would be one of the more influential because it is raw and got me to create art in a more visceral way about what I was feeling. It is not my favorite piece (I don’t think I have one) but an influential one. I found that the news of the pending war which looped on my radio was affecting how I perceived. That unconscious suggestion and how it affected the work – really sparked my curiosity and I tried to stay more open in process from then on.

It simultaneously addresses – systematic termination of life (the strategic strikes), a valuation and devaluation of life (who is expendable vs. who is saved, whose economic needs/ religious beliefs are “more” relevant). Also, it addresses failed communication, the desire for power, the detachment of the drone operator and duality of their life – and the manner in which they themselves are a drone of another and so on…

When working, do you adhere closely to a rough sketch done beforehand? Or do you let your cut-outs act as puzzle pieces and arrange, execute from there? When I am creating illustrations for magazine clients, I have to make roughs – but if it is my own work, I prefer to start from somewhere abstract to begin with. I like the authority and energy of the brush stroke and use it to invest some life and composition to the surface. I then assemble- by rummaging through my cut files and looking at magazines to find the ideal pieces. Each one informs where the picture is growing a bit more and then I know what I am building structurally – but not its final look. I do not know what anything will look like until right near the end. I work on multiple pieces at first, rotating through them for more prolonged attention, as I get to know them better.

His works are surreal and symbolic narratives reflecting the obvious influence of Brughel’s works – old school yet new school. The complex compositions, golden colorings, masterful execution and flow of humorous humanity in Mike’s works place him over the top. A veteran tattoo artist, he is the owner of the internationally-renowned tattoo shop, Everlasting Tattoo. Mike he also does woodworking, inlay, builds guitars and various other fun & crafty things when he isn’t painting.

I am often inspired and motivated by…. I’m inspired and motivated by various things. It could be a visit to a museum, an image in a book, an argument, a kiss, a person on the street, a dead pigeon…… I’m always super motivated when I come back from Europe – there is so much to be inspired by there!

Good Morning Sweet Prince - Mike Davis

If I could spend the day with any artist (dead or alive) it would be… I think it would be Jan Steen…..he is one of my favorites. The reason I chose him is because I think he would just be a fun person to hang out with. And we would … I don’t know how much we would talk about art but we would for sure enjoy some food, drinks and a laugh. Based on my knowledge of him, he was a guy who, despite his obvious genius, didn’t take himself too seriously. He liked to have fun and be mischievous. my alternate would be Jackie Gleason.

The tip or art technique (a specific tidbit of craft, advice or mechanical expertise) that has helped me the most is … I can’t say there is any tip or technique that has been particularly helpful … I still feel like I have no clue what im doing.

Any thoughts on the contrasts between tattooing and painting?

There are major differences between tattooing and painting…. Tattooing has very strict boundaries you must stay within- and when you put the needle to the skin you are committed and must follow through. Every mark must be very deliberate. Painting is total freedom, you can make changes, you can paint over something if you don’t like what you have.

Laurie Lipton was born in New York and began drawing at the age of four. She has lived in Holland, Belgium, Germany, France, London and most recently – Los Angeles, California. She creates wonderfully detailed and super tight renderings of haunted Victorian scenarios, working mostly in black and white (pencil, charcoal and etchings). Laurie’s surreal worlds contain narratives of ghostlands – staid skeletons, vintage housewives and Big Brother – all hold court in a tapestry of gothic science fiction. Modern postcards anointed with mischievous glee, political stabs, fancy lace perfection and Steampunk environs. The mistress of all pencil pushers – Laurie gives M.C. Escher a run for his rendering money. She creates a layered universe of detail – on one single sheet of paper, labored tableaus of extraordinary thought, dark beauty, humor and skill.

You work usually in black and white – beautiful graphites and lately some etchings. Can you tell us how & why you chose this medium?

I tried to teach myself how to paint like the early Renaissance Masters but couldn’t figure out the complicated egg-tempera technique. While I was a poor student traveling around Europe, I couldn’t afford paint so I began to use pencils more & more. They were cheap & convenient. I developed my own peculiar way of drawing using thousands of tiny lines to build-up tone, mimicking egg tempera painting technique. I was also inspired by the frozen, disturbing photos of Diane Arbus. I realized that black & white had an atmosphere all its own and that it was perfect for the imagery I was exploring.

Artist Amy Guidry grew up and currently lives in Louisiana. Some of her arresting works have a wonderful Western movie feel, with a surreal kick. Kind of like Clint Eastwood meets Georgia O’Keeffe, at the O.K. Corral. The clean, stark desert backgrounds have that white light that speaks so clearly of the desert climate – dry and expansive. For someone who doesn’t live there, she captured it incredibly. Other works place people in surreal yet everyday situations, altering and twisting our perceptions. One of Amy’s series “New Realm” is composed of dreamy elegant, almost floating self-portraits – sometimes juxtaposed with not-so-pretty realities and emotions.

From Amy: “My work stems from two loves- Psychology and Art. With Surrealism being the grand marriage of the two, I was naturally drawn to every aspect behind the movement. Using images conceived from dreams and free association that I catalog in several sketchbooks, I stitch together whole series from countless thumbnail sketches. Themes I explore involve the human psyche- who we are and how we interact with each other, including our relationship with other animals and the natural world. “

My favorite art memory from my childhood is… playing with oil pastels- such a big change from the crayons and markers I was used to. I loved the vibrancy of the colors.

Amy Guidry

My interest in art/painting started … since childhood. I can’t even remember working on many of the drawings saved from my childhood since they were done at such an early age. All I knew was that I loved to draw and apparently mass-produced so many my mother couldn’t keep them all. I would blow through an entire package of paper in no time so there were always packs of paper kept on the ready for me. I started off with crayons, obviously, but as I became more advanced, I really enjoyed charcoal, graphite, and pen & ink. Then I became more interested in oil and acrylic, the latter being my preference today.

I am often inspired and motivated by…. dreams. As of late, I’ve been getting a lot of my ideas from dreams or free association exercises where I just block out everything else that clutters my mind and let my imagination wander. Usually at night when I’m just starting to fall asleep is my most creative time. I’ve read about this and in my experience, it’s true. When you relax and stop worrying about all your to-do’s for the next day, you mind is better equipped to tap into your creativity. I’ll sometimes just think of a concept, or even just a word, and see what images come to mind. Even imagining what my next painting will look like conjures up some useful ideas. I keep a sketchbook nearby for these moments so I can jot down anything that comes to mind.

If I could spend the day with any artist (dead or alive) it would be… probably Salvador Dali. And we would…. well, first, I’d love to hang out in his studio just to watch him work and pick his brain. I’m curious about his process. Other than that, it would probably be interesting to attend a party with him- “interesting” being an understatement.

The tip or art technique (a specific tidbit of craft, advice or mechanical expertise) that has helped me the most is …. to learn more about marketing/business. I read anything I can get my hands on about the subject, scour the internet, listen to podcasts, etc. As a full-time artist you are now a small business owner. One of my design professors said that artists fail not because they are bad artists, but because they lack business skills.

Hieronymus Bosch's "Temptation of St. Anthony."

If I could own one piece of art, out of the world’s collections, it would be … oh, this is such a hard question! I think I’d have to go with Hieronymus Bosch’s “Temptation of St. Anthony.” (above) His work is so rich with narrative as well as detail. For me, he is THE pre-Surrealist and actually, if you were to ask me to name some of my favorite Surrealist artists, I include Bosch in that list.

Wild West - Amy Guidry

My favorite piece of my own art is…. another tough question- it’s like picking a favorite child. I guess I would say “The Wild West” (above) because… of the challenges it posed. I was working on a different series of work at the time when the concept for “The Wild West” came to mind. I sketched it, made a few notes, and put it away for several months, maybe close to a year. When I felt ready to work on it, I knew that it was going to be a challenging piece technically speaking, but also conceptually. I’m always looking for ways to improve in both of those aspects, so that usually involves getting out of my comfort zone. I had to play with my technique a bit, I also started using gel medium which was a first, and I wasn’t really sure what my collectors and galleries would think of the change in subject matter. My work has always been surreal, but I upped the ante on this series. The response has been really good, though, so I would say this painting is a “favorite” in that it reminds me of that personal journey.

My ultimate project or fantasy is … collaborating on a project to promote global awareness of animal cruelty and promote the humane treatment of animals. Also I’d love to be commissioned for a piece to raise awareness of the plight of stray animals and increase pet adoption- which would have to be done on a massive scale through a large organization like the Humane Society.

The last song I choose to listen to was… “Just One of Those Things” by The Rat Pack. Technically Pandora chose it for me on my Big Band station, but I did give it a thumbs-up.

The last book I couldn’t put down was …. wish I had a more exciting answer here, but “The 12 Million Dollar Stuffed Shark” by Don Thompson. It’s an interesting look into the art market- the how’s and why’s behind art auctions. Though I have to admit that reading about people that buy art solely as an investment/trophy is a bit depressing. I try not to focus on that too much and just glean whatever information I can from the book.

My favorite word is … probably my cat’s name, “Baby.” Seems like I use it a lot. I work alone in my studio all day and he’s usually the one to come greet me or follow me around, so I’m always talking to him or I’ll sing his name. That’s probably too much info…

It’s not hip, but I really love …. hmm, well, these days I think it’s hip to like things that aren’t hip. That said, I guess it’s probably still not hip to like watching exercise/diet infomercials. On the occasion that I find an infomercial on tv about exercise equipment or diet junk, I’ll actually watch it. The more outlandish they are, the better. I find them entertaining, especially when they have someone giving a “testimonial” and crying. It’s all so fake, I can’t help but watch.
